2 What is ZIP CommentMaster?
The PKWare ZIP file compression system is the most widely used of all
available systems. One of the features that the ZIP system supports is user
addition and modification of a 60 character comment for each file residing
in a ZIP file library. ZIP also supports a user specified comment that is
applicable to the entire ZIP file.
As nice as having comments for ZIP compressed files is, the manner in
which these comments are added or modified is quite clumsy. So clumsy, in
fact, as to mitigate against using comments at all. That's where the ZIP
CommentMaster (known hereafter as ZCM) comes in.
ZCM is slick utility that permits a ZIP system user to rapidly and
easily manipulate comments. A full-featured string editor is provided to
edit and store individual comment strings and a full-featured text editor is
provided to manipulate a main ZIP file comment. In addition, ZCM allows
using a file browser such as Vernon Buerg's famous LIST to view the contents
of compressed ZIP files and to execute PKware's PKZIPFIX utility on any ZIP
or SFX (self-extracting) EXE file.
ZCM has been thoroughly tested using version 1.10 of the PKWare ZIP
system. ZCM works with normal ZIP files, encrypted ZIP files, and ZIP files
containing files created with the PKWare Authenticity Verification envelope
(AV).
3 Programs Needed to Operate ZCM
You will need to acquire either the Shareware distribution version or
the registered version of PKWare's ZIP compression system. As of this
- 2 -
writing, the current version is 1.10 and is usually distributed in a file
name PKZ110.EXE (or ZIP). You can contact PKWare at the address below:
PKWARE Inc.
7545 North Port Washington Road
Suite 205
Glendale, WI 53217-3422
You can also find this marvelous system on just about any computer
bulletin board system (BBS) or commercial on-line access system such as
Compuserve Information Service (CIS) or Genie. PKZ110.EXE may be accessed
from the New-Ware BBS. Please see the chapter on the New-Ware BBS in this
document.
The files in this package that may be called by ZCM are PKZIPFIX.EXE,
ZIP2EXE.EXE, and PKUNZIP.EXE. PKZIPFIX is used in those rare cases where a
ZIP file has a problem, ZIP2EXE is used to convert a ZIP file to a self-
extracting EXE file, and PKUNZIP is used to decompress files for viewing.
ZCM does not require any of the ZIP system files for manipulation and
listing of ZIP files comments.
New-Ware strongly recommends Vernon Buerg's famous LIST file browser
for use with ZCM. Contact:

4 About Shareware
ZCM is Shareware. PKZIP and LIST are also Shareware. Shareware is NOT
free. It is computer software offered for sale at a set price and the only
real difference between Shareware and other commercial software products is
the method of distribution and the important "try before you buy" feature.
With Shareware you are normally licensed by the owner/author of the program
to operate the Shareware distribution copy on a trial basis. Then if you
like it and make regular use of it, you are bound to pay for it.
Registered users are those users that elect to pay for ZCM ($20) and
register that payment with New-Ware. By virtue of registration and payment
for the program, registered users are granted a license to continue to
utilize the program on their personal computer for as long as they choose.
This license authorizes the user to use the program on any personal computer
system he or she may own so long as the program is operated on only one
computer system at a time.
- 3 -
Site licenses for use of ZCM on multiple computers are available upon
request at a reduced fee that is based on the number of single machines
licensed for use.
5 How To Register
There is no functional difference between the Shareware distribution
version of AM and the registered version save the absence of the opening and
closing Shareware screens in the registered version.
The price of ZCM is $20.00. you may register ZCM in one of three ways:
1) By mail with check or money order to:

Press Alt+R from the main ZCM display or from the closing Shareware
screen to display the registration window. Prompts will be issued for the
pertinent information and you will have the option of printing the
registration form when the form is completed.
Upgrades to later versions are available to registered users on the
New-Ware BBS at no cost. Access to the BBS is a privilege granted by New-
Ware that may be revoked at any time for any reason. Those who request

The New-Ware Shareware Products BSS operates 24 hours per day, 7 days
per week. Node #1 is dedicated to registered users only. Nodes #2 is open
to all callers. Users registering via the BBS receive access to the latest
registered version within 1 day after leaving their credit card data. Users
who register by mail or phone may also access the registered version by BBS,
but you MUST log on and leave a comment to the sysop to the effect that you
are a registered user and desire access. The author can also be contacted
on CIS via PPN 71535,665 (please use EASYPLEX).
The latest versions of all programs that are supported or used by ZCM
may be obtained via the BBS. The BBS also serves as an avenue for product
support. You may report problems or ask questions about the operation of
ZCM via the message facility of the BBS.
7 System Requirements
ZCM may be operated on any IBM PC/XT/AT/PS2 or compatible running under
DOS 2.0 and above. Limitations include 500 ZIP/EXE files per directory, 350
directories per drive, and 500 files per archive. Individual ZIP compressed
file comments are limited to 60 characters in length and the main ZIP
comment is limited to 32,760 characters. ZCM may be operated in the
DESKQView and Windows 3.0 environments.
All monitor and graphics cards are supported, including "composite" (2
color) monitors and backlit laptop screens. Full mouse support is
automatically provided if a mouse driver is present in the system. Any dot
matrix or laser printer may be used for printing file and directory tree
- 5 -
directory listings. The printer must be capable of printing IBM line draw
characters if the directory tree is to be legibly printed.
CE is designed primarily for use with one or more hard drives.
Starting and operating ZCM from a 5 1/4" 360K drive is not recommended
because of the possible lack of disk space for temporary files, etc. A
multiple 3 1/2" 720K/1.4M or 5 1/4" 1.2M system will probably be okay, but a
hard drive is the best way to go.
8 Distribution Files
The following files are included in AM distribution package:
CE.EXE - Main program
CE.OVR - Overlay file
CE.HLP - Help file
CE.DOC - Operating manual
EDITCMDS.DOC - Text & Line Editor Commands
PATHINFO.TXT - DOS PATH information
VENDOR.DOC - Disk vendor info
WHAT'S.NEW - Latest product info (if needed)
New-Ware prohibits the modification of any of these files in any way,
shape, or form except by the individual evaluator or purchaser.
8.1 Version History
1.1 - Initial release.
1.2 - Removed the ZIP directory list sort. If the target ZIP file had a
directory list that was unsorted, the comments added by ZCM would
get out of synchronization with the file names.
8.2 Running ZCM
To access ZCM from anywhere in your system, place CE.EXE and CE.OVR in
a directory that is identified in your DOS path string. If you are not
familiar with the DOS path string, please read PATHINFO.TXT. To operate CE,
simple type CE and press the Enter key. CE will then load and display all
the ZIP and EXE files in the current directory. If you desire to operate on
a different directory, enter the full directory path name as a command line
parameter. For example, suppose you wish to operate CE in a a valid
directory named E:\DATA\ZIPFILES. Simply type CE E:\DATA\ZIPFILES and CE
will begin operation displaying ZIP and EXE files from the specified
directory.

9 The User Interface
The ZCM user interface has been carefully designed to provide a set of
commands and controls that maximize the program's utility for both straight
keyboard and mouse users. The interface employs a "point and shoot" file
manipulation function via file name lists with scrolling cursor bars. All
ZCM functions are available through function keys or mouse clicks. The
program can be exited to DOS by pressing Esc key, the mouse, or by pressing
Alt+X. Alt+X exits immediately while the Esc key issues a prompt before
exiting.
9.1 Primary Commands
The main ZCM screen displays all the ZIP and EXE files found in the
active directory. ZCM can automatically detect whether an EXE file is a
PKZIP SFX file nor not when the Enter key is pressed to view the file's
directory.
In addition to using the mouse or the Enter key to view the contents of
a ZIP file, nine program functions are available from the main display.
On-line help F1
Configure ZCM F2
Change drive F3
Run PKZIPFIX F4
Change directory F5
Rebuild directory tree F6
Individual comment search F7
Main comment search F8
Edit default comment file F10
Send listing to file Ctrl+L
Tag/Untag all files Ctrl+T
Quit to DOS Esc
These functions will be explained in detail later in this document.
The Esc key is always used to abort a function or to leave a display.
The Enter key is used active a function or a feature. The cursor keypad is
used to move the cursor or cursor bar.
9.2 Mouse Interface
CE provides full mouse support. The mouse cursor is always visible and
movable. The left mouse button acts as an "action" signal and it usually
emulates the Enter key. The right button usually emulates the Esc key.
Nearly all ZCM displays have descriptive labels that can be clicked with the
mouse. For example, the main display has a text box containing labels for
all the ZCM commands.
- 7 -
The mouse can be configured to operate immediately upon the first
click. This feature is most apparent when operating with a file list. If
this option is not on, a click of the mouse when the mouse is not pointing
to an item under the cursor bar will move the cursor bar to that position.
If this option is on, a click of the mouse will instantly move the cursor
bar to that item and emulate a press of the Enter key.
9.3 On-line Help
Brief descriptions of all AM functions are available from the main ZCM
display and most other pop-up windows and dialog windows by pressing the F1
key or clicking the left mouse button on the "Help" string in one of the
window borders. Calling help from the main window will pop-up a help topic
menu. Calling help from any other ZCM function will open a help window
appropriate to the program function from which help was called.
10 Configuring ZCM
ZCM maintains user specified configuration data in a file named CE.CFG.
This file will be created automatically the first time you configure ZCM and
elect to save that configuration.
ZCM employs a dialog window as a user-interface for configuring the
program. Press F2 at the main display to activate the configuration dialog.
A window will pop-up that contains a group of check boxes, five text field
editors, and an "Ok" push button box. You can move from each of these
dialog areas with the mouse, the Tab Key (Shift+Tab to reverse), or the
Enter key.
10.1 Check Boxes
The check box area contains 6 checkable items. When this area is
active, you may check or uncheck an item with the Space Bar, mouse, or the
"+" key. If an item is checked, it is active.
10.1.1 [X] Sort The Dir Tree
If this item is checked, ZCM will always sort the directory tree when
scanning the disk. If not checked, no sort occurs.
10.1.2 [X] Split File Names
ZCM can display file names in the conventional manner, e.g., as
FILENAME.EXT or in a split fashion as in FILE EXT. This option affects
both the main file display and the ZIP file view display.
- 8 -
10.1.3 [X] Use Beeps
This option determines whether ZCM will emit a beep when certain
messages and warnings are issued.
10.1.4 [X] Rename PKFIXED.ZIP
This is an interesting option. When PKZIPFIX is run against a ZIP
file, it creates a new file named PKFIXED.ZIP. This file is a repaired
version of the target ZIP file. If this option is on, ZCM will
automatically delete the target ZIP file and rename PKFIXED.ZIP to the name
of the target ZIP file. If an SFX EXE file is involved, ZCM will
automatically convert PKFIXED.ZIP to PKFIXED.EXE using ZIP2EXE. It is very
important that you have PKZIPFIX and ZIP2EXE located in a directory that is
in your DOS path.
10.1.5 [X] Mouse 1st Click
If this affects the behavior of ZCM when the left mouse button is
pressed (clicked) when browsing file lists or menus. If this option is off
and the mouse cursor is over an item that is not under the cursor bar when
the left mouse button is pressed, the cursor bar will move to that item. If
the left button is then pressed with the mouse cursor over the highlighted
item, ZCM treats the click as if the Enter key were pressed. If this option
is on, then the cursor bar is moved immediately and the action is
interpreted instantly as a press of the Enter key.
10.1.6 [X] Clear On 1st Char
This option affects the line editor used to edit individual compressed
file comments. If a comment already exists, it is loaded into the line
editor for you. If this option is on, the entire line will be cleared if
you type any standard alphabetic character first. If you press the
Backspace or Del key first, then the line clearing never takes place
automatically.
10.2 Text Edit Fields
There are five text edit fields. Each is a served by same line editor
that is used elsewhere in the program. After entering or editing the text
as desired, you can move on to the next field via the Tab key, by pressing
Enter, or by pressing Alt+k where k = highlight letter of the field title.
10.2.1 Temp Dir
This field provides ZCM with a temporary directory to use. A valid DOS
directory must be entered here. If nothing is entered, ZCM will created and
delete its own temporary directory as needed.
- 9 -
10.2.2 Log Dir
This directory is important to the New-Ware directory tree catalog
strategy. If you enter a valid directory name here (C:\LOG is good), then
all accesses to the directory tree structures of your system will be greatly
speeded up. ZCM will store the tree data for each drive it accesses in
files with the name of the form NEW-WARE.X, NEW-WARE.Y where X and why
connote drive designators.
10.2.3 Password
Entry of a password is important only if you are going to be using a
file browser to view compressed files. When you are in the ZIP contents
viewer and press Ctrl+Enter to view a compressed file, ZCM does several
things. The first action it takes is to call PKUNZIP to decompress the
target file to the temporary directory. If the file you are viewing is
compressed and you have entered a password in this field, the password will
be passed to PKUNZIP. If the file is encrypted and you have not configured
for a password, ZCM will not decompress the file because PKUNZIP will refuse
to decompress without the password.
10.2.4 Browser
This field is for configuration of the file browser you wish to use.
Most of you will undoubtedly use the ZCM default, which is LIST. Be sure to
just enter the file name with NO extension, i.e., LIST and not LIST.COM.
ZCM does NOT pass the /M (use mouse) switch to LIST to force it into using
the mouse so if you intend to use LIST with ZCM be sure to run LIST
independently with the /M switch and then clone it.
10.3 Dialong Exit
If you desire to leave the configuration dialog without saving any
changes, just press the Esc key or mouse click the appropriate label. If
you desire to keep your changes, you may mouse click the Ok box, press
Alt+k, move to the Ok box and press Enter, or mouse click the appropriate
label. At this point the dialog window will clear and a window prompting
you for a place to save CE.CFG will appear. You may not wish to save to
disk at this point in favor of using your configuration changes just for the
current session. Or you may wish to save to disk. It's your choice.
It's important to understand that the location of CE.CFG is important.
If the only copy is in a directory that is not in the same directory from
which CE is executed or is not in the DOS path, CE will fail to find it and
it will not be loaded. Best advice is to put both CE.EXE and CE.CFG in the
same directory and ensure that directory is in the DOS path so that you can
call this useful program from anywhere in your system.
- 10 -
11 System Navigation
You can operate on any drive:\directory in your system via the main
display F3 and F5 commands.
11.1 Changing Drives
Pressing F3 will pop-up a list of drives from which to select. Move
the cursor bar to the desired drive letter and press Enter, press the letter
key for the desired drive, or click on the desired drive to change to
another drive. Press Esc to abort with no action. A director tree for the
new drive will appear immediately after effecting the drive change with the
cursor bar over the currently active directory for that drive.
11.2 Changing Directories
Use the F5 command to change directories. A window will pop up that
displays a graphical representation of the directory tree for the current
drive. Move the cursor bar (or use the mouse) to the desired directory and
press the Enter key. ZCM will then display all ZIP and EXE files found in
the designated directory.
11.3 The New-Ware Tree Catalog Strategy
Like many other New-Ware products, ZCM employs a strategy that greatly
speeds up display and use of the directory tree for a give drive. The data
for each drives tree is maintained in a file residing in a user-specified
directory. You must configure ZCM to use a valid system directory for this
strategy to be used.
If you use this strategy, ZCM will build and maintain a catalog file in
the specified directory named NEW-WARE.X, where X indicates the letter of
the drive. If you are not already using this strategy via another New-Ware
product, ZCM will scan the current drive to build the tree the first time it
is executed. Access to the tree thereafter is much faster than scanning the
drive each time.
There is one small drawback to using the catalog file strategy. ZCM
will not know when directories are added or removed from a drive and you
will have to use the F6 command to re-scan the drive when this occurs. This
necessity is a very minor drawback since most systems are fairly stable and
are not changed much.
- 11 -
12 Editing ZIP Comments
This is what ZCM is all about - editing ZIP file comments. This
section will address in detail just how easy this is with ZCM.
12.1 The ZIP File Viewer
Those of you that use ArcMaster will find the ZIP file viewer to be
like an old friend. To activate the viewer, simply place the cursor bar
over a ZIP or SFX EXE file and press the Enter key. The file viewer window
will replace the main display and will contain the list of files residing in
the target ZIP file.
There are two display modes. The default display shows each file in
the list as a line that contains the file name, date, time, size, compressed
size, compression type, and the ZIP version to extract. If the file has a
PKWare Authenticity Verification (AV) envelope, an "AV" will appear at the
end of the file line. The comment mode shows each file as the file name
and, if one exists, it's comment. You can toggle back and forth between
these modes by using the F6 key.
12.2 Comment Editing
12.2.1 Individual File Editing
You can edit file comments in either display mode. Pressing the Enter
key will place you in the comment edit mode. In this mode, the file name
for the comment being edited will remain visible and a 60 character line
edit field will be displayed adjoining the file name. The commands
available for editing the comment are available via the F1 (help) key.
You do not need to exit the edit mode (Esc key) in order to edit other
comments. Pressing the Up or Down Arrow keys will move the edit field up or
down the list as desired and any edits made will be retained as the field
moves up or down. You may also press the Enter key to move down the list.
The Esc key will exit the edit mode without retaining any edits made.
You can restore the original contents of the an edit field at any time
prior to leaving it by pressing the Ctrl+R key.
When you are finished editing comments you can save all your edits to
the target ZIP file by pressing the F5 key. More about this later. Use the
Esc key to exit the ZIP file viewer WITHOUT saving any edits.
- 12 -
12.2.2 Main File Comment
The PKWare ZIP system permits the storage of one variable length
comment for each ZIP file. ZCM provides a powerful, full-featured text
editor with which to create/edit ZIP main comments.
Enter the ZIP file comment editor by pressing the F7 key. The editor
screen will replace the ZIP viewer screen and any existing comment will
appear in the editor. At this point you can begin editing the existing
comment or entering new comment text. Reference to the many text editor
commands is available via the F1 (help) key. This discussion will address
the main editor functions only.
Note that there is an editor status line on line 2 of the display that
looks like this:
FILENAME.TMP Line: 1 Col: 1 2110/32766 Insert Smart Indent Wrap
This line dynamically reports the status of the assigned file name, line and
column position of the cursor, used/available buffer space, insert mode
(insert or overwrite), indent mode, and whether word wrap is active. If
word wrap is active, you can reformat entire paragraphs via the Ctrl+B
command.
It is important to note that the editor is never automatically cleared
unless done so by a specific command or by returning all the way to the main
display level. You may enter some text, press Esc to return to the ZIP file
viewer and return to the editor via the F7 key without losing any changes.
To manually clear the editor, press the F10 key. Even when this is done, it
is not too late to restore the original ZIP comment, if one existed. This
can be accomplished with the F9 key. In fact, you can always restore the
original ZIP comment up until the time you use the F5 command in the ZIP
viewer to save all comments.
ZCM also supports loading external text files into the comment editor
and it supports saving the text in the editor to a disk file. To load a
file into the editor, press the F3 key. ZCM will then prompt you (top line)
to enter a file specification. If the file you wish to load is in the
currently active directory, just type in the file name and press Enter. If
not, you must enter the full DOS path name for the file as in:
F:\TEXTFILE\MYCOMM.ASC. ZCM will then discard the text currently in editor
and load in the text from the specified file.
It is important to note that the first time you enter the main ZIP
comment editor, ZCM assigns a file name to the editor even though the text
is from the existing ZIP comment. This file name is built from the target
ZIP name and the default extension .TMP. Thus, for a target file named
MYDATA.ZIP, the editor will have a file named MYDATA.TMP assigned. Note

also that the current file name is displayed on line 2 of the display. This
means that you can immediately save the contents of the ZIP file comment to
the default file name by pressing Ctrl+K+S or F2. If you wish to save the
current editor contents and switch to a new file, press Ctrl+K+N.
You may also mark text with the F7/Ctrl+K+B and F8/Ctrl+K+K keys and
then save the marked block of text to a file by pressing the Ctrl+K+W key.
Similarly, you can import a text file into a marked block by moving the
editor cursor to the desired position and pressing the Ctrl+K+R key.
Other block commands include block move (Ctrl+K+V), block copy
(Ctrl+K+C), and block delete (Ctrl+K+Y). You can also toggle the case from
upper to lower case and back with the Ctrl+O+O command. Other powerful
editing commands are also available.
12.3 Saving All Comments
All comments can be saved to the target ZIP file by pressing the F5 key
while in the ZIP file viewer mode. Since ZCM operates only that portion of
the ZIP file that contains the Central Directory, no permanent damage can
occur to the actual ZIP compressed files. In the most unlikely event of
Central Directory corruption of ZCM, you can completely recover the ZIP file
through the use of PKZIP fix. New-Ware has successfully truncated a ZIP
file at the beginning of the Central Directory and successfully restored the
file via PKZIPFIX. All that is lost in this case are the file and ZIP main
comment.
13 Searching ZIP Files For Comments
There are two modes of comment search. Both modes search all ZIP and
ZIP SFX files on the current drive. The first mode, activated by the F7
key, searches for a user specified individual file comment. The second
mode, activated by the F8 key, searches each ZIP main comment for a user-
specified target string. When F7 or F8 is pressed, ZCM will first ask if
you desire a case-sensitive search. If you answer Yes, then the upper case
characters are treated as different from lower case. For example, an "F"
will not match an "f". If you answer No, the case of both the target and
search strings will be ignored. Note that a case sensitive search is faster
but more rigorous.
If ZCM finds a match, a message will appear on the top line of the
display. You will have the opportunity to [V]iew the ZIP/EXE file,
[C]ontinue the search, or [H]alt the search. If you choose to view the
file, ZCM will do one of two things. If you are searching for an individual
file comment (F7), you will be placed in the ZIP file view mode with the
cursor bar over the file name with the comment that matched the search
- 14 -
target. If you are searching main ZIP comments, you will be placed in the
main comment editor with the cursor at the beginning of the matched string.
14 ZIP Main Comment Batch Mode
This functions permits you to add the currently configured default main
ZIP comment file to all tagged ZIP/EXE files. Note that any existing
comments in the tagged files will be replaced by the text in the default
comment file. Simple tag the files you wish to operate on and press the F9
key.
15 Editing The Default Main Comment
ZCM makes it easy to retrieve, edit, and retrieve the active default
main ZIP comment file. This is the file that will be used for adding a
single main comment to a group of tagged ZIP/EXE files in the batch mode (F9
command). Just press the F10 key and you will be placed immediately into
the main comment editor. If the file (named in the configuration dialog)
does not exist, ZCM will create it, otherwise it will be loaded into the
editor.
16 List To File
The list to file function is activated by pressing Ctrl+L. This
command acts upon tagged files and when you press Ctrl+L, you will be
prompted to enter a file name into which ZCM will place the listing. ZCM
will create the file and process each tagged ZIP/EXE file. The following
text is a sample of the text that is written to the specified file. Note
that each file name is listed and any existing comments are also listed.
The main ZIP comment appears just after its file name and before the
compressed file listing.

17 Editing Commands
ZCM employs a line editor for editing individual file comments and
configuration dialog text fields. A full-screen text editor is employed to
edit main ZIP comments. Both editor command sets are based upon the
venerable and popular WordStar command set.
The ZCM context sensitive on-line help feature provides a summary of
the editor commands for referral during program operation. In addition, the
ZCM distribution package contains a file named EDIT.CM which contains
command definitions for both editors.
